Deon Venter - Order of Things - 2005-2006
"The unique start and stop character is used to identify the leading and trailing ends of the barcode symbol. Quiet zones are spaces preceding the start character and following the stop character. Therefore in essence, these barcodes are very specific and in their graphic nature they appear to be very minimalist and nonrepresentational. The facts are, of course, just the opposite. Personal barcodes could be designed to represent and describe a concept which remains hidden but, on decoding, would be freely available.
Barcodes today are so intertwined in contemporary society that they are hardly noticed. My interest in barcodes is not in what could be termed “pop” influences. , but both as a beautiful minimal image revealing the language of modern culture, and that of commerce. Beautiful things can also be very dangerous things." Deon Venter, 2006
