Photos from Deon Venter's San Juan Islands Museum of Art
opening March 5th, 2020
Upcoming Exhibition - Drawings - Venter Gallery - Friday, February 28th
The Venter Gallery will host an exhibit of new large-scale drawings. Titled 'Pentimento' these works evoke his successful Avatar series, these large-scale drawings utilize Deon's well established drawing technique of erasing through the imagery on the paper, highlighting that the erased line is as important as the drawn line.
In art, Pentimento refers the "re-appearance in a painting of an original drawn element which was eventually painted over by the artist". While utilizing the iconography of Northwest Coast symbols in the majestic trees and birds of prey, here in Deon's work, this hiding and revealing combine brilliantly to create a clear and rich picture.

In Situ
In situ - adverb, adjective - is a Latin phrase that translates literally to ‘on site’ or ‘in position.’ It can mean ‘locally’, ‘on site’, ‘on the premises’, or ‘in place’ to describe where an event takes place and is used in many different contexts.
Deon Venter’s photography exhibition as part of the first Salt Spring Photofest, depict compositions from some of Deon’s favourite places. Along with his wife Kathy, he takes camping trips to Avatar Grove in the Port Renfrew area, and to the Pacheedaht Territory on the southwestern coast of Vancouver Island.
There, inspired by the natural landscape, in particular the trees, he takes photos to give reference to his studio work, where he works up paintings of these same subjects and places, to great effect in his signature oil impasto.
Avatar Grove is home to ‘Canada’s gnarliest tree’, a subject Deon has painted and which is represented in the photos ‘Untitled’, ‘Big Burl’ and ‘Elephant’. Another photo titled ‘Avatar Grove’ shows the ground and understory in an ethereal light, testament to the spirituality of the place.
Like many places in the Pacific Northwest, the beach and shore of the Pacheedaht territory is littered with the remains of uprooted and dispersed trees, with their gnarly and contorted root structures exposed to the bleaching effects of salt and sunlight. This is clearly illustrated in work such as ‘Dragon’, ‘Temple’ and ‘Uprooted’, where the forms evoke the bones of sea creatures, both real and imagined.
Closer to home, three misty and gauzy photos looking back at the shore allow us to see in a new light. Here too, Deon’s self portrait ‘Yeti’ - an accidental and unintended shot - where only an impression of the artist is seen.
These photos are archival silvertone prints on aluminum and from an edition of 3.
